Happy Birthday (Dec, 2012)

Coach’s Corner – They stay the “stars are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas”. This must be true because Colton is going to be a big star at Whitman! In his first competition at Whitman (fall ITA’s) Colton knocked off two seeds before falling in the quarters  to eventual champion and teammate Andrew La Cava. I joke with Colton that his first college match was also the first time he played a match indoors (at our indoor tennis center). Actually Colton’s game looks like he grew up on indoor courts — he hits a flat ball, stays up close on the baseline and looks to dictate court positioning. In doubles he teamed up with Steven Roston and made an impressive run to the semi-finals before losing to teammates Conor Holton-Burke/Matt Tesmond.

Colton is an absolute joy to be around. I’m thrilled to have both he and James (the freshman) as a part of the Whitman family. Both Colton and James are incredibly solid and will form the future foundation of the team.

Also interesting to note that Colton is an Eagle Scout. During our annual team camping trip I typically have to help everyone set up their camps. Not with Colton — he is an outdoor pro! Perhaps I will have him lead the next few outdoor trips and I can sit back and relax!
