Coach’s Corner – One of the biggest kicks I get out of coaching is watching the growth and maturation of individuals. To that end it has been wonderful to see the change in Sam during his time at Whitman. He has really bloomed since arriving at Whitman. As a freshman he was a very quiet and shy young man. Now he is a leader not only the team but in the Whitman community. This past spring he was voted to be a junior class senator for ASWC (Associate Student Body of Whitman College). Recently he also voted president of the Whitman’s Investment Club.
Sam has also showed great maturation in his tennis game. Last year Sam was an important part of the Whitman team that won a 4th straight NWC title. During that year Sam went undefeated in NWC play and played #5 at the NCAA National Tournament.
Sam had a great run at the fall ITA tournament advancing to the semi’s of singles before losing to eventual champion (and teammate) Andrew. In doubles he paired with freshman James Rivers to advance to the semis before losing to the #1 seeds (and teammates) Andrew and Jeff.

Sophomore season (2010-11) - Posted second straight undefeated spring singles season against NWC opponents, going 8-0 (10-3 overall) … Played primarily in spots 4, 5 and 6 … Also notched second straight 3-0 NWC doubles record … Was slated to play No. 5 singles in semifinals and finals of NWC post-season tourney, although Whitman closed out quick victories before his match could be played … Won three-set thriller at No. 4 singles to help Whitman scramble past NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State … Also claimed big three-set win at No. 6 singles as Whitman dropped 5-4 decision at No. 12-ranked Cal Lutheran … Teamed with senior Chris Bailey to advance to doubles final of ITA’s regional fall tournament, where they lost to Whitman teammates … Sadeghi also advanced to Round of 16 in singles bracket.
Freshman season (2009-10) - Won first two college singles matches on day one of ITA’s regional fall tournament (beating sixth-seeded senior in one match) … Lost 6-4, 6-3 to teammate in quarterfinals … Also teamed with freshman Matt Tesmond to make quarterfinals in doubles bracket, where they dropped 9-8 decision to Whitman teammates … Rolled through impressive first spring season, posting 9-0 NWC singles record, winning matches in slots 5, 6, 3 and 1 … Only singles loss of season came in No. 6 match vs. No. 1-ranked UC-Santa Cruz … Also teamed with two different partners for 3-0 record in NWC doubles … Played and won at No. 1 singles at Lewis & Clark, winning 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) … Also won three times at No. 2 singles during NWC season.
